The Center for Biotechnology – UFRGS was launched in December 1981 through a contract involving the State Government of Rio Grande do Sul, the Bank for Development of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (BADESUL), the State Foundation for Research Support (FAPERGS) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), with the following objectives:
- Integrating efforts and resources among the State, State and Federal Agencies for Research Support, Universities and Private Companies of the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
- Conducting research projects in biotechnology
- Training human resources in biotechnology
- Promoting the integration between public and private entities that may contribute to research development
In 1997, in agreement with what was established in the Statute and Regiment of UFRGS, the Center was formally designated a Center for Interdisciplinary Studies.
Currently, 32 Ph.D. researchers work at the CBiot facilities, 80 doctoral students; 65 master students, 21 undergraduate students, and two technician.
At present, the administration of CBiot is carried out by the Director Council, the Director of the Center, by the Scientific Council and by the Group Leaders (Principal Investigators)
